Engaging in our English program at Niagara University will prepare you to use language-based critical thinking skills and compelling communication as powerful tools in your personal development, future career, and role as an informed citizen in a fast-changing world.
As a student in the program, you’ll develop and practice these skills by reading, analyzing, and critiquing great literary texts and translations from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other regions to gain a deeper understanding of people and the world around them. Our program will prepare you to persuade through oral dialogue and written text as you continue your development into agile readers, informed educators, and effective communicators.


Double Major Opportunities
Our program can accommodate students looking to double-major in subjects like Education, Communication and Media Studies, Theatre, Psychology, and Pre-Law.
Research Opportunities
Our students can work with department professors on their research, as well as work on independent projects as part of the senior seminar Capstone course or honors theses.
Experiential Learning
You can gain hands-on experience with a variety of opportunities, depending on your academic and future interests. Participate in Study Away or Study Abroad, earn credit with industry-related internships, student teach, work on The Aquila (NU’s literary and art journal), and more.

What You’ll Study at Niagara University
As an English or English Education major, you’ll be encouraged to seek out new literary favorites and delve into others about which you feel passionate. Our program aims for both depth and breadth of knowledge in English studies, allowing you to traverse texts from various times and cultures with curiosity and confidence.
In addition to majors and minors in English and writing studies, the English department teaches WRT 100 (Writing and Rhetoric) and ENG 110 (Literary Perspectives), required for all students at Niagara. We also offer a variety of electives in literature and writing that contribute to general education requirements.
