Biography
Dr. Joseph M. Sirianni, Ph.D is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Niagara University, where he joined the faculty in 2014. His research and teaching interests include the diffusion and utilization of new media by today’s youth, film and cultural studies, media writing and reporting, and mass media theory.
Focus of Teaching
Dr. Joseph M. Sirianni’s courses at Niagara have included International Communication, Media Writing, The Art and History of Film, and Film and Culture. An avid viewer of horror films, Dr. Sirianni has structured the Film and Culture course to examine the ways in which gender is depicted within the horror film genre.
Current Research
Dr. Joseph M. Sirianni’s research focuses on studying the flip side of technology utilization—its misuse. Specifically, his research examines how social media use amongst young adults can lead to negative ramifications in their lives. He has explored how consuming and sharing social media can tarnish reputations, lead to compulsive usage and dissolve romantic relationships. His research has been published in two academic journals including Cyberpsychology: The Journal of Psychosocial Research in Cyberspace and the Journal of Sex Research. Dr. Sirianni has also presented his research at leading communication conferences including the International Communication Association and the National Communication Association.
