Dr. Douglas G. Tewksbury

Biography

Dr. Douglas G. Tewksbury, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Niagara University.

Dr. Tewksbury is a sound artist and researcher who teaches courses in media studies, cultural studies, and environmental studies. He is formerly the Fulbright Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at the Institute for Globalization and the Human Condition at McMaster University.

Dr. Tewksbury’s creative practice as a music and sound artist explores environmental themes through creative works, commonly using obsolete, antiquated, and often-broken media and electronic music and recording technologies. His 2022 work Brutes (Hush Hush Records) manipulated and spliced human voices and choral performances on very long analog tape loops to create long-form compositions. Dr. Tewksbury’s 2021 album, Paths (Geertruida Records), explored environmental themes through a suite of electronic, ambient, and piano works, and various field recordings.

Current Research

Dr. Douglas G. Tewksbury’s research area is focused on environmental, culture, and technology. He is particularly interested in looking at social media and online communities of climate-change deniers, oil activists, and pro-fossil fuel cultures, especially in Canada.

Past research works have looked at how social movements (Ferguson/BLM, Occupy, Quebec Student Strikes, etc.) used new media technologies, how new forms of mediated interaction in creative collectives worked to foster creative communities of practice, how new surveillance technologies are crowdsourcing border patrol as a participatory platform, and other various projects on media, culture, and technology.
