Writing and math course placement recommendations are provided for incoming freshmen which align with students’ academic background based on research conducted by the Mathematics and English faculty and the Academic Success Center professional staff. Students are recommended for one of three levels of writing, math (non-calculus), and calculus courses and they should enroll in these courses during their first year at Niagara. Students who have previously received credit for these courses are exempt from enrolling in these courses.
Writing Course Placements:
- WRT 100, Writing and Rhetoric, 3.0 credits
- WRT 100Y, Writing and Rhetoric, 3.0 credits (course meets 4 hours/week)
- *CRL 101, Critical Literacy (3.0 credits): a developmental integrated reading and writing course; attendance is required at a recitation hour for 10 weeks of the semester. Students recommended for WRT 100Y or CRL 101 will be asked to complete additional diagnostic testing housed in Canvas to confirm placement.
Non-calculus Track Math Course Placements:
- Regular course placements include:
MAT 101, Math for the Liberal Arts, 3.0 credits
MAT 251, Math for Elementary Teachers, 3.0 credits
MAT 102, Introduction to Statistics, 3.0 credits - Developmental course placements include:
MAT 101, Math for the Liberal Arts, 3.0 credits
MAT 251, Math for Elementary Teachers, 3.0 credits
MAT 102Y, a section of Introduction to Statistics which meets 4 hours/week, 3.0 credits - Remedial course placement:
*LSK 095, Basic Math (non-credit)
Students will be asked to complete additional diagnostic testing housed in Canvas to confirm placement. Once confirmed, a student must enroll in LSK 095 before taking a credit-bearing math class. LSK 095 is a non-credit three contact hour course but is considered when determining a student’s full-time status. As a result, students who register for LSK 095 are recommended to register for 12 additional credits of coursework.
Calculus Track Math Course Placements:
- Regular course placements include:
MAT 111, Calculus I (4.0 credits)
MAT 107, Business Calculus I (4 credits; based on consultation with your academic advisor) - Developmental course placements include:
MAT 109, Pre-calculus (4.0 credits) – must be completed before enrolling in either MAT 111 or MAT 107
MAT 106, Intro College Math (3.0 credits; meets 4 hours/week) – must be completed before enrolling in either MAT
107 or MAT 109
