President's Report

Maher James

Welcome to the 2016-2017 edition of Niagara University’s President’s Report. The information contained in the following pages reflects how this great institution pushes forward into the future, binding together the gifts of scholarship and service to ignite “The Power of Niagara University.” It also represents the dedicated students, alumni, employees and friends whose hearts pump Purple Pride and have given of themselves to make Niagara a better place. Truly, they are the fuel that powers us, the rising tide that lifts all boats.

The hundreds of individuals and organizations listed in this annual report are a testament to the devotion and pride that we all feel toward the mission of Niagara University. You believe strongly in Niagara, as do I. Your generosity provides much needed scholarship support for deserving students, as well as faculty and academic program support. Within these pages, you’ll read about what compels loyal donors like Bob Daino, ’66, Maureen Buoneto, ’07, and Vin, ’88, and Mandy, ’87, Flaherty to support the continued academic, athletic and social excellence of their alma mater. At the end of the day, it is this type of financial support that allows us to train the next generation of leaders and model citizens.

I am proud to say that, through careful stewardship of your generosity, there was much to celebrate at NU during the past year. Examples abound of how the commitment of our dedicated and accomplished faculty, our student scholarship, and the academic and faith foundations in our Catholic and Vincentian and liberal arts traditions have yielded significant results for the university.

In May, we announced receipt of one of the largest personal gifts in Niagara’s storied history, a generous bequest that helped us establish and enhance initiatives related to our commitment to inclusive excellence. We had our institutional accreditation extended by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Our flagship service-learning program, Learn and Serve Niagara, changed its name to IMPACT, a rebrand that reflects a measured approach to collective impact through project-based experiential learning. Our pledge to improving campus infrastructure is also ongoing, as evidenced by the renovation and expansion of our Dining Commons at Clet Hall. This beautiful new space provides our students, alumni and members of the greater community with increased opportunities to create and collaborate.

At Niagara University, we teach our students and alumni to be the change the world needs, to think creatively, to thrive as professionals, and to use their God-given abilities to be the rainbow for the many people living among the clouds of society. We ask them to harness their individual and collective talents to live lives of impact, by putting new ideas, hopes and dreams into action. It is so invigorating to see Niagarans succeeding – personally and professionally – at all corners of the globe; these are the daily reminders of our Catholic and Vincentian heritage that fill us with purpose and optimism.

Today’s political landscape presents exciting and complex opportunities and challenges for private institutions like Niagara. It’s time to further energize our goals and strategies, leveraging our excellence in academics, athletics and civic engagement to enroll more students who are ready to launch lives of impact. We do so at a time of great pride and strength – in seeing and knowing the success of our students as they graduate and move forward in their careers or advanced study.

I am delighted by the response to this challenge on our campus, and am hopeful that you will join us in telling your family, friends and neighbors about Niagara. Our vision is to prepare leaders, citizens and professionals who, like you, contribute to a vibrant and prosperous society. That’s “The Power of Niagara University.”

Thank you once again for your support.

With every good wish,

James J. Maher, C.M.
President
