Office of Career Services: What They Can Do For You!
Over the past two years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to have a graduate assistant position at Career Services on the Niagara University campus! Not only has this experience given me the opportunity to receive assistance with paying for my schooling, but it has also helped me communicate with many employers, businesses, and improved my social skills and confidence when searching for a job opportunity.
I have endlessly found new ways that this position has emphasized what I am capable of for my future career. Unfortunately, not many people utilize what this office is skillful in!
Just to talk a little about what our office is willing to assist our students and alumni with are their resumes, cover letters, interviews, job searching and much more! This office has the ability to prepare and guide our students through their years at Niagara and ensure they will leave here with a job opportunity - or several. The one-on-one attention that our members give daily is just one small ounce of how much the staff cares about the students and their future goals!
Before coming into this office, I had an idea of what a resume should look like, but nothing near what your resume really stands for. Your resume has the potential of representing all of the experience, opportunities and achievements a person has accomplished throughout their lives. Our staff members are capable of checking out every single detail and offer different viewpoints to show a student what employers will see through their eyes.
Cover letters are something we all avoid and push to the side when we are applying to positions, but it is also much more than that. This is your opportunity to explain your experience on your resume and the chance to prove to employers that you are the best choice for their company or organization. This takes effort to tailor for all the jobs you are applying too, but our office can help you master it every time!
Lastly, interviews and job searches can be intimidating and scary processes, to say the least. Some people hold the confidence to walk into a room and talk about themselves in the highest manner, but others aren't so gifted. Our office holds mock interviews during the week and offers recommendations on where students can improve. This does not only include showing up with your resume, but coming in professionally dressed, prepared with company research, along with a resume and cover letter in hand.
I am hoping that many more people in the future will stop by the Office of Career Services to see where we can take them in the employment world! We will not let our students graduate from this school without success and knowledge to take with them in the upcoming years.
