I am halfway through my last semester at NU. This is my first blog post in quite a while. I have found that I have been busy and just haven’t had the time to write a new entry in a while, but I’m happy that I had time today to post an update on my time at NU.
My last week of midterms is officially over! Surprisingly, I had no exams to take in the Office of Academic Support during midterm week but rather a paper to write for film and culture, a take-home test for public speaking and an online exam for American Deaf Culture that was outside of class. I was very pleased to find out that I am doing well in my classes and that no low grades were reported on my midterms this semester.
I have been enjoying my classes and the material I’m learning this semester. I recently gave a PowerPoint presentation for public speaking and completed the assignment of delivering a personal piece for oral interpretation. For the personal piece, I spoke about my mom and stepdad’s wedding last year and found that I was able to talk about the experience from memory even though I had written down what I wanted to say in the speech.
I have also been enjoying my American Deaf Culture, and Film and Culture classes. We have just completed our first test for ASL 310 (Deaf Culture) and are beginning to receive instructions for our capstone project at the end of the semester. For my film and culture course, we watched The Exorcist last week and, after seeing that film, I can say that I honestly don’t think audiences had seen anything like The Exorcist before it came out in 1973 – and that it is a film I couldn’t have imagined myself watching a year ago. Taking a class on horror films has allowed me to expose myself to a genre with which I had little experience.
I have also enjoyed being involved in extracurricular activities on campus. Last week, the NU Readers Club had a meeting where we discussed Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits and began deciding what we will read for the remainder of the semester. I also attended the opening performance of The Macbeth Insurgency, a modern adaptation of Macbeth that kicked of the NU Theatre season. An event that is happening next week that I am very excited about is a Campus Activities-sponsored trip to Sky Zone indoor trampoline park, a place I’ve wanted to go for a long time but haven’t had the chance to.
My last week of midterms is over and I am enjoying the second half of my final semester at NU. I am looking forward to many more great experiences at NU as the semester continues.
