Internship Success - Wegmans

Ally Bellanca, a Food and CPG marketing major from Webster, NY will graduate in May 2021. In the summer of 2020, Ally worked as the digital fulfillment intern at Wegmans. Upon graduation, she will be joining the Clorox Company as a sales & customer analytics intern for the summer and also attending NU’s MBA marketing program.

How did you secure the opportunity?

I originally was chosen for a marketing internship with Wegmans Corporate for summer 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic offices closed and internships were cancelled. Wegmans found an alternative in-store internship for me so that I could still carry out my internship with the company while also receiving credit for school.

What did you do on a daily basis?

I had many jobs on a daily basis which included checking inventory, disabling unavailable products on the app, submitting orders for inventory, training and assisting in managing the department, finding new exciting ways to promote the new e-commerce program, and managing labor to increase profits. I engaged with customers to enhance their experience while also managing and fulfilling their orders.

Most importantly, what did you learn?

In this role I learned different skills that will better prepare me for my professional career. I was faced with new challenges like management, communication and technical difficulties. When faced with these problems it was important to find a solution quickly in order to keep up with the face paced, customer centric environment. This experience gave me skills and knowledge of managing a team and finding the most and least successful ways to market and advertise, resulting in me learning the best practices for the company’s and department’s success.

What advice do you have for future students?

I advise other students to take action and look for internships! The experience I gained from my internship I could not get anywhere else. It taught me many skills that I could not get in the classroom and it better prepared me for what I will face in the professional world.

If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?

Career services helped me create and revise my resume and cover letters many times until they were perfect. They answered any and all of my questions when it came to internships, interviews, and documents for applications. They have helped me so much and I strongly advise all students to connect with Career Services in order to be best prepared while finding and applying for internships and jobs.
