Jenna Barone, a food and CPG marketing major from Niagara Falls, NY will graduate in May 2020. In the summer of 2019, Jenna worked as the social media marketing intern at Step Out Buffalo. Upon graduation, she plans on securing a job in social media marketing or food and CPG marketing such as food brokerage or category management.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I previously followed Step Out Buffalo on their social media accounts and loved their content. I was looking on their website one day and noticed they offered internship opportunities. I reached out to the owner of the company via email and introduced myself and applied shortly after. They reached out to me for an interview and I got the internship!
What did you do on a daily basis?
On a daily basis I posted Instagram stories about activities going on each week in WNY, made posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, engaged with our followers, did guerrilla marketing tactics, promoted Step Out Buffalo events such as Cork Head Wine Festival, Bloody Mary Festival, Sweet Tooth Festival and Nest Festival, edited articles on the Step Out Buffalo website, assessed follower insights and worked on the Step Out Buffalo for business social media accounts.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
With this being my first internship, I learned how important it is to have an internship in general. Internships allow you to have that hands-on experience that you don’t get in the classroom. You are there to learn, and they are there to help you. You also learn what you like and do not like, and it can help you make decisions for your future. For myself, I learned that I love social media marketing, more than I thought I would, and I would love to make a career out of it.
What advice do you have for future students?
My advice would be to attend career events, network, and don’t be afraid to go after what you want!
If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?
Career Services has been extremely helpful in my 3 years at Niagara. They helped me build my resume and prepare for interviews.
