Michael Potempa, a senior finance major from Lockport, N.Y., recently interned at KeyBank as a retail management associate intern. In July 2019, Michael will begin working at KeyBank full time.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I found this opportunity through Indeed and had a phone as well as an in-person interview.
What did you do on a daily basis?
I split my time at KeyBank as a teller and shadowing the different departments in the branch, such as investment services, personal banking, as well as private banking.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
I learned a great deal about the banking industry and the different ways in which banks help their clients save money. One of the most important things I learned is that KeyBank is heavily invested in doing what is best for their customers. Key investment services focuses on doing what is best for the customer so they are put in the best financial situation possible.
What advice do you have for future students?
My advice for future students is to look for internships early. Put yourself out there and odds are you will find a good match. I was hesitant about being able to get an internship I would enjoy, and applying isn’t always fun, but in the end, it is totally worth it.
How did NU's Office of Career Services help you?
Stephanie Morris is essentially the reason I got this internship. I began stressing out about the application process and she suggested I come in to discuss how I should go about applying. Stephanie helped me organize my resume (which was previously a disaster) in a way that would be presentable to employers. She also helped me prepare for the interview process and tell me what I should expect. I received a full-time job offer from KeyBank a week after my internship ended, and I will begin working there next July. I couldn’t be more thankful for the help Career Services, and especially Stephanie, have given me throughout my four years.
