Internship Success - Discover716
Serena Leatherbarrow, a Marketing major with a Communications minor from Williamsville, NY will graduate in May 2023. During her sophomore year in the fall semester of 2020, Serena worked as the marketing intern at Discover716 in Buffalo, NY.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I found the internship on Handshake.
What did you do on a daily basis?
On a daily basis I collaborated with other interns to create content for our blog and spent a lot of my time on social media working with local businesses to promote their services. Much of my experience at Discover716 was focused on creating content and campaigns for the health & wellness branch of the company that I developed!
Most importantly, what did you learn?
Throughout my time at Discover716, I learned to have confidence in my work. I was given the freedom to make big decisions on my own and take the lead on many of my projects which allowed me to develop a sense of independence that I know will be beneficial in my future career.
What advice do you have for future students?
It is never too early for students to start thinking about their career and gaining experience through internships. I was nervous about doing an internship as a sophomore, but I truly learned that my age doesn’t define my abilities. I’m glad that I did an internship early in my college career as I still have roughly two years before I graduate which gives me plenty of time to continue gaining valuable experience before I enter the workforce!
If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?
I have worked with Career Services several times to revise my resume which has been extremely beneficial. Career Services has also been a huge help throughout my internship as I worked to gain credits for the hours I was putting in & am now going on to participate in the Career Services mentoring program through Discover716.
