Senior Zach Recckio, a Luxury Hotel Operations major from Port Byron, NY, has three club management internships under his belt, all in different states throughout the country. Most recently, Zach worked as a Club Management Intern at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I applied through the Club Management Association job board.
What did you do on a daily basis?
I rotated through all of the administrative operations: Accounting, marketing, human resources and catering. I also worked in each of the six club houses they had, shadowing managers to see their day to day operations.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
I learned a different side of the hospitality industry than I had before. While I have worked in restaurants in the past, I was able to see the bigger picture management side. Being able to work in different departments made me realize that I hope to go into events upon graduation.
What advice do you have for future students?
Look early! I don’t think it's ever to early to start looking for a job/internship. I contacted the manager for this internship in October. With all the details, including the program being new and for myself to move across the country, I didn’t accept until late April. The sooner you get your resume out in the industry, the sooner you can build your personal brand.
How did NU's Office of Career Services help you?
I go to career Services at the start of each semester. I have them look over my resume to ensure its top quality before I send it to employers. Also, I have them take a look at cover letters I have written to ensure they meet the right goals and objectives. During this time, I also ask any questions I have about interviewing, receiving the offer and more.
