Internship Success - Alliance Advisory Group

Nick Graham, '20, a finance major and Niagara's upcoming student body president for the 2019-2020 academic year, secured a summer internship with Alliance Advisory Group in Buffalo after networking at our Career Expo. Gearing up for his senior year at NU, Nick is ready to not only enjoy his final year on Monteagle Ridge, he's ready to take the best opportunity that comes his way after graduation head on.

How did you secure the opportunity?

I made a connection with a recruiting director at the Career Expo on campus.

What did you do on a daily basis?

I work closely with senior advisors and business development associates by sitting in on their meetings with clients, assisting in client and prospect outreach, take part in marketing campaigns, and in down time, go through online course trainings. Also, I join Skype meetings with interns and managers across the country on a weekly basis.

Most importantly, what have you been learning?

To this point in my third week of my summer internship, my biggest take away is the importance of beginning to plan for your future as soon as possible and finding the right advisor to build a lasting relationship with. Many people wait too long to start saving or approach the debt in their life recklessly. Those are just two common examples of uninformed financial decisions that many people make and I am grateful to be learning a sound philosophy in holistic financial planning that I can apply to my future clients, as well as myself.

What advice do you have for future students?

I would highly encourage future students of any major not just to attend the Career Expo, but really get involved in it. Print plenty of resumes and introduce yourself to as many recruiters as you can. You will be surprised at what relationships will form and the opportunities that can arise from them.

How did NU's Office of Career Services help you?

Career Services helped me put together and polish up my resume leading up to the Career Expo. They also helped me get credits for an internship I was a part of this past spring semester.
