Alexis Arth, ’20 a marketing major from Wheatfield, N.Y. secured a position with Colton RV as the digital marketing intern. When it came time for her internship to end, Alexis received an offer to continue her work at Colton RV as a part-time employee. Upon graduation, her goal is to find a job with a company where she is able to succeed and grow in the marketing field.
How did you secure the opportunity?
Colton RV has a smaller marketing department, but they were looking to grow in the opportunity of taking on an intern with new insight and knowledge. They felt as though I was a good fit to help with their social media and blog posts, which is something that was not focused on before.
What did you do on a daily basis?
I post on social media daily, based on what’s going on in the company, like new inventory, upcoming events, promotions, and blog posts that followers would find interesting. I also write blog posts, again, based on inventory, events, and promotions for the week or month. I assist with video creation and editing, mainly for promotions and during the events or RV shows. There are also times where I assist in events such as the setup, promotions and marketing so people come to the show.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
I learned that the classroom experience does reflect into job opportunities. However, there are many instances where working for a company is completely different. Throughout this internship, I was able to figure out my strengths and weaknesses when working in marketing for a company and I was able to thrive in my strengths and my manager and coworkers helped me work on my weaknesses. It was a great learning experience outside of the classroom.
What advice do you have for future students?
Try and find an internship because it is such an incredible experience. It will help you figure out your strengths and weaknesses as well as your likes and dislikes. You will be able to learn more and apply the skills from the classroom into a real world opportunity.
If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?
Career Services is a great outlet to have. They were able to help me better my cover letter and resume, which led to more opportunities for interviews for internships, and in the long run, jobs. They are always willing to help and are ready to help you get a head start on your future career.
