Allyson Thomas, of Buffalo, N.Y., began her journey at Freed Maxick CPAs in their MAX Internship program. After completing the internship at their Buffalo office, Allyson secured a full-time role as a tax associate.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I was able to get this opportunity with the help of Career Services as well as some of the business professors at Niagara. Chris Aquino was extremely helpful in helping with the application and writing an outstanding letter of recommendation. By connecting with the professors, I was able to create a personal relationship which helped me throughout my internship search.
What did you do on a daily basis?
The internship offered a variety of experiences that focused on the different aspects of public accounting. I was able to participate in a client audit, prepare a tax return, and volunteer within my community. By gaining knowledge of the different areas and opportunities within the firm, I was able to see what areas of work I enjoyed more than others. Also, by gaining real life experiences and working with current employees, I was able to see how welcoming and helpful the environment was at Freed. We also had time to volunteer at the local food bank. It was awesome to see that even though this profession is very demanding, the firm still makes times for volunteering and giving back to the community.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
Throughout the internship I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge about public accounting. By having hands-on experiences, I was able to see a day in the life of an accountant and what was involved their everyday work style.
What advice do you have for future students?
Get involved with firm events and office tours as soon as you can. It is never too early to show your face and have people hear your name at accounting events. Make connections with recruiters and current employees of the firms. Be sure to follow up with them and stay connected with them overtime because you never know what they can do for you down the road.
