Internship Success - Walt Disney Company
Emma Carlo, a Destination Management major from Hamburg, NY will graduate in May 2021. During her spring semester in 2019, Emma worked as the Bell Services Dispatcher at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge in Orlando, FL.
How did you secure the opportunity?
I heard through Niagara University and the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management that I could pursue this opportunity while earning 12 course credits back to NU. This allowed me to apply, stress free, because I knew my status as a student at Niagara would not be compromised and I would still be able to graduate on time.
What did you do on a daily basis?
I mastered guest service excellence through assisting guests daily with luggage and general questions about the resort. I operated two company vehicles, a shuttle that transferred guests from one side of the resort to the other, and a transfer van which I used to transfer guest luggage from resort to resort. I dispatched bellmen to deliver luggage to guest rooms and pick-up guest luggage from rooms upon departure.
Most importantly, what did you learn?
Regarding hospitality, I learned how to go from providing customer service to achieving guest service excellence. Disney is committed to a level of guest service that is sought after by companies across the world. Because of this internship, I was able to learn these skills from the best. Also, working in a resort provided me with both front desk and back office experience as well as a better understanding of overall hotel operations.
What advice do you have for future students?
