Inequality, Race, and Justice

As our nation grapples with racial injustice people are considering new ways to elevate those who have been marginalized. This involves changing norms and how organizations function. It also involves greater awareness and understanding of our history, political system, and criminal justice apparatus. Students with a minor in Inequality, Race, and Justice will be better positioned to take roles in leadership and be among the innovators who will work for change and social justice both within and beyond established institutions.

The minor consists of 5 courses.

From sociology choose three of the following:

SOC 325 Race and Ethnicity 
• SOC 304 Sociology of Deviance 
• SOC 312 Social Stratification 
• SOC 328 Social Change 
• SOC 303 Social Problems 

Choose two classes from two different departments listed below:

• 
HIS 273 African American Survey, 1877-Present
• HIS 346 Black Freedom Movement 
• POL 241 Public Policy
• POL 355 Civil Liberties
• CRJ 375 Alternatives to Incarceration
• CRJ 265 Principles of Justice

Note: Alternative courses for the minor may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the department of Sociology. Also, note that sociology majors can take an additional relevant course outside their major in consultation with the minor advisor to complete the minor.
