Bio
Current Research
My research focuses on British intervention in the Middle East during World War II, particularly in Egypt and Iraq. I look at the war as a period of revived imperial interest in this region, as Britain reasserted its authority over formerly decolonized territories. Within this framework I am particularly interested in the role of the Kurds in Iraq, the question of colonial violence and protest in Egypt, how British area experts interpreted local developments during the war, and the developing rhetoric of democracy in Iraq during the later war years. My research draws on both British archival sources and Arabic language sources such as newspapers and memoirs.
