Full-time Success - Hamister Group

David Ressman, '22, is a Lockport, New York native who recently graduated with a degree in Luxury Hotel Management.  David is a full-time employee at Hamister Group in Niagara Falls where he is learning the operations of every department within the hotel.

How did you secure the opportunity?

I did what was recommended from Career Services. I actually went on LinkedIn and I connected with fellow Niagara University Alumni. By doing this I actually found my current general manager. I sent her a message on LinkedIn where I introduced myself. I came in for an interview where I was hired quickly due to my experience and the resume at Niagara University helped me remake from scratch.

What did you do on a daily basis?

I work at the front desk of the hotel checking guests in and out and attend to their needs. I also help serve guests drinks at the bar before the bartender arrives and I also have to help assist housekeeping to bring stuff up to a guests room. We currently don’t have a director for the engineering department so sometimes I have to do a little bit of maintenance.

Most importantly, what did you learn?

The most important takeaway I have is learning the system that this hotel uses. I have just recently started this position so I have much more to learn about this organization and the way of their operations.

What advice do you have for future students?

I advise you to find something you really enjoy doing and that you can honestly see yourself doing for a career. You are going to spend a lot of time working so you should really do something you really enjoy. I also think it is important to not just hear but to listen and really take the information in and just try the best that you can. The more effort you put in the more it will end up rewarding you in the long run.

What are your immediate goals after graduation?

After I graduate I plan on taking this program at work called the “GMLD program.” I graduate on December 21’ so I will be available to work fulltime which is required for this program at work. They will train me to work in every department within the full service hotel. That is my immediate plan post graduation. Then once that is complete I plan to move out of state and further my career path.

If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?

I spoke with Stephanie and I was seeking support with making my resume and setting up a LinkedIn profile. Stephanie guided me to Krista and she did an amazing job with setting up my resume. Krista got me on the right track and I made some changes to my resume and she revised it. Then I spoke with Tina and she showed me everything I needed to do to make a good LinkedIn profile. I really secured my position with Hamister Group through the support of Niagara University. All 3 of these ladies recommended me to seek out NU alumni.
