Dr. Joel Louwsma

Originally from Michigan, Joel Louwsma earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. He subsequently held a postdoctoral position at the University of Oklahoma and a visiting faculty position at Smith College. Dr. Louwsma teaches a variety of mathematics courses at NU.
Dr. Louwsma's research interests are in the areas of geometry, topology, and group theory. He finds problems that involve interaction between algebra and geometry especially interesting. Dr. Louwsma enjoys working with students on research projects.
Dr. Louwsma loves to travel. As an undergraduate, he studied abroad in both Budapest and Moscow, and more recently he has made summer research trips to Germany, Korea, and the United Kingdom. He resides in Lewiston.
