Certification Areas & Requirements

Graduation Caps

Elementary Certification Requirements: 

Students will need the following pre-requisite courses completed prior to applying for NYS certification. These are NYS certification requirements and will not prevent you from being considered for admission into the program. 

  • Math
  • Science
  • English
  • Social Studies

Students will need to complete the following NYS assessments in order to receive certification. These will be completed during the program.  

  • EAS
  • Multi–Subject Childhood (1-6) CST
  • Multi-Subject Early Childhood (B-2) CST

To register for tests go to: New York State Teacher Certification Examinations

Students will need to complete the following to be eligible for certification. 

  • Child Abuse Workshop
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (S.A.V.E)
  • Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Seminar
  • United States Fingerprinting (All Students)
  • Police Check (Canadian Students)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training

*Theater Education K-12 students may also choose to apply for elementary education and extend their certification through NYS Education department.

Secondary Certification Areas and Requirements: 

Niagara University offers the following certification areas in secondary education: 

  • Math
  • English
  • Science (Biology or Chemistry)
  • Social Studies 
  • Business & Marketing
  • Languages (French or Spanish)
  • Theater Education K-12

*Students will need to have 36 credit hours in their desired certification area in order to be eligible. 

Students will need to complete the following NYS assessments in order to receive certification. These will be completed during the program.  

  • EAS
  • Content Specialty Test (CST)
