Internship & Full-Time Success - Deloitte

Cassandra Siwy MBA ’21 studying Accounting from Orchard Park, NY secured an internship during the summer of 2020 with Deloitte in Buffalo, NY as their Audit & Assurance Intern. Upon graduation she will be working full-time at Deloitte in the Audit and Assurance department while pursuing her CPA.

How did you secure the opportunity?

Through my educational experience at NU and multiple internships, I was able to secure an internship with Deloitte for summer 2020. I applied on Handshake and had my first interview on campus in Career Service. I was then called back for a second interview at their Buffalo office where I was able to further discuss my skills and experiences with the Managing Director who ended up offering me the position.

What did you do on a daily basis?

During my virtual internship I was able to network on a daily basis with both current employees and other interns throughout the entire United States. We learned how to navigate the different systems, how to do research and find data, and really solidified our Zoom skills as we were on video all day every day, constantly having to deal with technology issues. Throughout the internship we were assigned projects to work on with other interns pertaining to research materials or basic audit knowledge. Our final project at the conclusion of the internship was to create a mock client proposal to present to our specific office’s partners and managers.

Most importantly, what did you learn?

I learned what it is like to work in a virtual environment and how to still be effective and communicate on a daily basis. It is difficult enough to encourage participate in person, so when it came time to do projects on zoom, we all had to work together and be active in order to get the job done.

What advice do you have for future students?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. I’ve always struggled with talking on the phone/through video, but after completing this entire internship online, I can confidently say I am much more comfortable participating and being active in zoom calls and meetings. I was able to talk to employees and intern from all different cities, something I never would have done had the internship been in person! Also take advantage of Career Services, they are there to help you! Without them, I would have never been able to secure an internship and full time job offer at such a prestigious accounting firm.

If you have worked with Career Services, how have they helped you?

Career Services has been a tremendous help throughout my years at NU! They are there to help me every step of the way whether it’s editing my resume, creating a cover letter, deciding which internships/jobs to apply for, or how to answer tough interview questions. They are always just an email or phone call away and their advice has helped me with so many aspects of my educational and professional career.
