As an academic and professional department within the College of Arts and Sciences at Niagara University, the department of theatre studies educates and trains theatre artists as performers, designers, managers and technicians. Within a liberal arts context, the department fosters the study of the humanities and the pursuit of academic excellence; at the same time, through a conservatory approach to study and curriculum, it also provides and encourages opportunities for professional training and experience. Through theatre productions chosen from a broad repertoire, the department provides students with vital, hands-on and in depth experiences which supplement classroom and studio learning. At the same time these programs provide the university community with a diversity of theatre experiences; similarly, the department makes these performances available to the local community.
Especially mindful of the university’s commitment to Roman Catholic and Vincentian values, the department fosters within its students those values, especially as they have reference to the poor, the disadvantaged and the marginal of society. With the university, the department prepares its students for positions of responsibility in the theatre professions and in the broader society.
