Transportation and Traffic Management Course

Course 2: Transportation and Traffic:                           One Day Course, 6 Classroom Hours

Overview: The largest cost element in supply chain logistics is freight transportation. As costs rise, it becomes more important to understand the fundamentals of freight transportation markets, the challenges of corporate traffic management, and how to manage for greater efficiency.

Who should take this course: The course is ideal for those whose supply chain responsibilities interact with freight and traffic, and it is also a great introduction for a new traffic manager.  Those more experienced with traffic management may gain additional insight into how freight markets work and how to reduce expenses. 

General Topics and some Specific Terms to be Covered:

  • An overview of freight transportation modes: Trucking, Rail, Water, Air, and Intermodal.
    • TL, LTL, Special carriers, Short Line RR, Intermodal, TEU, COFC, TOFC,  3PLs.
    • Update of industry news and economic conditions impacting freight
  • Key Economic Drivers of the Transportation Industry:
    • Load factor, yield, freight flows, carrier cost structures, fuel, CDL,  (O.R.
  • Traffic Management basics: Selecting and evaluating modes and carriers, negotiating rates, scheduling, consolidating.
    • Bill of Lading, Freight Bill, Audits, Claims, Cube Out v. Weigh Out, HOS Rules
  • How motor carrier and package freight rates are calculated.
    • Class Rates, FAK, Weight Breaks, Accessorial Charges, Density, Discounts, Surcharges,
  • Traffic Manager’s update: Latest trends and issues, Using 3PLs, cost saving ideas.
