Sherri Brown joined the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies of Niagara University in the Fall of 2008 following a move from Washington, DC. Dr. Brown was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts at Washington and Lee University in 1991. She went on to earn a Master of Divinity at Yale University Divinity School in 1996 and a Master of Science from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1997. Following a stint in the United States Peace Corps and several years working in the international development field, Dr. Brown returned to graduate school in 2001 to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in biblical studies at the Catholic University of America. She was awarded the Johannes Quasten scholarship for doctoral studies in 2001-2004. Once she became a doctoral candidate, Dr. Brown was awarded the Hubbard dissertation fellowship for 2006-2007. In the 2006-2007 academic year, she was named the Lawrence Boadt Professor of Scripture Studies in the Education for Parish Service program housed at Trinity University. In 2007-2008, she adjuncted at Wesley Theological Seminary, where she taught the year-long core curriculum course in New Testament. Dr. Brown also continues to teach a variety of scripture courses around the country through the permanent deacon formation program at St. Meinrad School of Theology.
In 2005, Dr. Brown published an article entitled “The Dialectic of Relationship: Paul and the Veiling of Women in 1 Corinthians 11:2-16” in the journal Salesianum. In addition, through her appointment as the Boadt professor she gave the inaugural lecture entitled, “Studying John’s Gospel Through the Prism of Dialogue” in Washington, DC, in the Spring of 2007. Her area of specialization is biblical narrative and her dissertation is entitled “Gift upon Gift: Covenant through Word in the Gospel of John.” She plans to continue her research into the Gospels and John in particular, but loves to teach in all areas of biblical literature as well as the interaction between biblical literature and contemporary fiction and nonfiction narrative in both literature and film.
She currently lives with her dog Gracie in Lewiston, NY, and is loving the Niagara community and the beauty of western New York.
