Room placement for new students is overseen by the Residence Life Office. Placements and roommate information is usually sent out in the beginning of August. Preferences for specific halls, floors and roommates are given every consideration, provided all pertinent requests are submitted in writing by the deadline stated in your housing packet. Preference is granted on a first-come, first-served basis using the date you paid your acceptance fee to Niagara. Roommates are matched on the characteristics noted and information provided by the student on the Residence Hall Preference Form.
Room selection for returning students takes place in the spring of the current year for the following academic year. All resident students are assigned a lottery number randomly, taking into consideration class status (graduate students choose first, then seniors, juniors, etc.) and judicial record. Off-campus students must visit Residence Life to obtain a lottery number prior to selection processes. Apartment applications are accepted first and apartment placement is completed prior to the general room selection process. During the general room selection, students choose their placement and/or roommate from available spaces at the time their number is called. Placements chosen by students during room selection are considered final until fall. Students are welcome to sign up for a summer waiting list if they are not happy with their chosen space. Changes are made only from this list and only through the summer. New waiting lists begin with the fall semester.
Students wishing to return to on-campus housing following their study abroad or internship experience are welcome to do so. If you are involved with study abroad or internship in the fall semester and would like housing for the spring semester, you will need to notify the Residence Life Office in November by letter or email (residencelife@niagara.edu). Simply let us know that you need a room and list preferences of residence hall, type of room, and roommate if known. Placement is based on space availability but all efforts are made to accommodate any request.
If you are involved with study abroad/internship in the spring semester, you will need to appoint someone to go through the room selection process for you to choose your room for the fall semester. This appointee would also need a signed letter or email from your NU email account, authorizing him/her to act for you during room selection. Your housing application card, the authorization letter and your housing lottery number (which you can find on your myNU page as soon as they are available) would need to be presented at room selection (and you would need to have prepaid your housing deposit) in order for the person to be permitted to choose a room for you. The process is the same for apartment selection, if desired.
