- May a NU coach have face-to-face contact with a prospect who is a non-qualifier while they are in their first year of a two-year college?
- No. A prospective student-athlete who was not a qualifier as defined in Bylaw 14.02.9.1 and who is enrolled in the first year of a two-year college may not be contacted in person on or off of NU's campus for recruiting purposes by a NU coach.
- May an NU coach text message a prospective student-athlete after they sign a letter-of-intent?
- Yes. A recent change in NCAA legislation has made it permissible for coaches to text message prospective student-athletes, but only after they have signed a valid NLI.
- May a coach increase a student-athlete's scholarship during the middle of an academic year?
- Yes, provided such an increase is unrelated in any manner to an athletics reason.
- If a prospect is coming to our campus to play in a game, can I talk to her/him before their game/contest starts?
- No. The same rules apply for events on our campus as do for those off of our campus. Therefore, you may not talk to the prospects until they have been officially released by their coach after the conclusion of the contest (this also means no contact between games/rounds of a contest).
- Is it permissible to provide the parents, friends or relatives of a current student-athlete with a parking pass to attend home athletic contests?
- No. It is not permissible to provide the parents, friends or relatives of a current student-athlete with a parking pass to attend home athletic contests. This would be considered an impermissible extra benefit.
- Are fantasy football, basketball, hockey, and baseball leagues permissible activities under NCAA regulations?
- No. Fantasy leagues (football, baseball, basketball, hockey, golf, etc.) involve using “real” players in professional sports; therefore it is considered an impermissible gambling activity
