"Coping
skills: A spectrum of strategies" was the theme of an
all day conference sponsored by the Mental Health Association
in Niagara County. The conference was attended
by nearly one hundred local mental health professionals
and members of the community. Feedback provided
by attendees indicated that the conference was a resounding
success. Heidi Nikischer, Education and Training
Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association discussed "Coping
skills for caregivers." Doris Richardson, RN, CPRP
and Helene Gilbert, Registered Music Therapist, presented "Creative
approaches to coping with stress: Art, literature, and
music." Timothy M. Osberg, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology,
Niagara University and Licensed Psychologist, discussed
weight control issues in his talk entitled, "Beyond miracle
pills and magic bullets: What psychological science can
contribute to the weight loss and maintenance battle." He
also focused on anxiety disorders in another talk entitled, "Fear
not! Coping strategies to deal with anxiety disorders." Mary
Jane Beilein, Executive Director of the Mental Health
Association in Niagara County discussed "Coping
with depression." Dr. Daniel Trigoboff, Licensed psychologist
and consultant, presented on "The art of anger (and how
to manage it)." Claudia Kurtzworth, B.S., CASAC, Public
Health Educator with the Niagara County Department of
Health, gave an uplifting lunch time presentation entitled, "Think
it, be it," which focused on how the way we perceive
people, places and events around us will determine our
thoughts, feelings, and actions. Several Niagara University psychology
majors volunteered their services in coordinating events
for the day including: Michele Kamas, Kari Nelson, Craig
Waldeck, and Erin Welch. The program planning committee
consisted of Cheryl Licata, Education Director of the
MHA and primary organizer of the event, Robin Zander
of the Behavioral Health Unit at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center ,
and Tim Osberg of the Department of Psychology at Niagara University . |
