May
is Mental Health Month. According
to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 1
in 5 Americans (22.1%) has a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Moreover,
there is evidence that the incidence and severity of psychological
disorders are increasing on college campuses. To
promote awareness of mental health issues among the Niagara
community, a new student organization, called Active Minds
at Niagara, was formed this semester. Active Minds
is a chapter of a national organization founded to increase
mental health
awareness, education, and advocacy on college campuses. In
recognition of Mental Health Month, members of Active Minds
at Niagara held a bake
sale in the lower level of the Gallagher Center to benefit
the Mental Health Association in Niagara County. In
addition, members of Active Minds conducted a raffle of
a stress relief basket containing various products to take
the sting out of the last week of classes and finals week. Proceeds
were used to help fund club activities in the forthcoming
academic year. At both events, Active Minds members
had various informative mental health brochures available
for distribution. Active
Minds welcomes new members from among all University constituencies
including students, faculty, staff, and administrators. |

The Bake Sale, Basket Raffle, and
Mental Health Brochure distribution were all a huge success,
as the club members recognized Mental Health Month and prepared
for the coming academic year. |
