NURSING ALUMNI COUNCIL
Origins of the Niagara University Nursing Alumni Council (NUNAC)
In 2003 and 2004, a small group of nursing alumni began meeting to assist and support Dr. Dolores Bower, dean emeritus of the College of Nursing during the closing of the nursing school. While the group’s initial goal was to establish a system whereby nursing alumni could obtain detailed information about their program of study in the College of Nursing, members have become involved in other issues such as developing an archive for nursing memorabilia; creating opportunities to keep new graduates involved and connected to Niagara; and organizing a celebration to commemorate all that the nursing alumni have done since the college opened its doors in 1946. Mary Lorich, former faculty member (check to see if she has agreed) serves as academic advisor to the Office of Academic Affairs regarding programs of study within the College of Nursing.
The Alumni Council is active with the Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Theta alumni chapter.
Alumni Council Involvement in the New Program
Now that Nursing majors have returned to Niagara University, new collaborations are being fostered between the Alumni Council and the Nursing Department. Alumni Council members were in attendance during the Nursing Week Luncheon in 2007 and continue to play a vital role in the future of Nursing at Niagara.
Mission Statement
The Charter group has also focused on improving communication with fellow alumni and planning events that will bring them together. To guide them in this effort, they have developed the following mission statement:
The Niagara University Nursing Alumni Council recognizes the impact our graduates have on the health of our nation and the world. The council recognizes the need for all alumni to maintain strong ties with classmates. To this end, the council will provide opportunities for graduates to meet, and maintain links to the university via niagara.edu/alumni.
