- As backing band to Kevin Hewick, recorded July 1980.

[Martin Hannett Web-site] "Around June 1980 (just over a month after Ian Curtis' suicide), Hewick was booked to go into graveyard studios (famous for A Certain Ratio's marvellous 'Graveyard And The Ballroom' cassette) to record 5 tracks for the planned double 10" (which later became the aforementioned 'Factory Quartet'). The night before, Tony Wilson phoned Hewick and suggested that 'the JDs' [Bernard, Peter and Stephen] go into the studio to back him. Wilson told Hewick that the JDs wanted to carry on as a band and playing someone else's material would ease their transition back into recording. [...] To quote Kevin: [...] 'We [the JDs] worked on two songs 'Haystack' and 'A Piece Of Fate'. It was decided to do Haystack first.' [...] The assembled band worked on a second song that has never seen the light of day. 'A Piece Of Fate' was the track - later reworked by Hewick into a song called 'No Miracle' in 1993."

[Frank Obertopp] "Regarding Haystack... The original booklet of the TWI007 cassette states: 'Kevin Hewick -Haystack- / An experiment at Graveyard Studios. June 1980. Kevin plays with a few musicians. Recorded by Martin Hannet'. The CD-re-release (Interphon IPCD-72001) states: 'Track 13: Kevin Hewick & New Order: Haystack, 3:55'. So itīs official: The few musicians were NewOrder. The Western Works demos were recorded in July 80. So Haystack is NewOrders first recording after J.D.
The book Dreams never end by C.Flowers says on Page 44 that Western Works was first and: 'A few days later, they played backup on two songs with Kevin Hewick, who was making an album entitled From Brussels With Love...' This info is wrong. I do not know if it is confirmed that two songs were recorded with Hewick."

Q: What is the Western Works demo?
A: The Western Works demo is New Order's first studio recording. Four songs were recorded in the Western Works Studios, Sheffield, in July 1980. The songs were Truth, Dreams Never End, Homage and Ceremony and the demo has been bootlegged.
