- "Mesh" and "Cries and Whispers" are mixed up and incorrectly named.
Q: This is a mesh! Mesh is not the same song as the one on my 1981-1982 EP. What's going on?
A: The 1981-1982 EP has the correct title. "Mesh" and "Cries and Whispers" have often been mixed up, starting with the Everything's Gone Green single. Stephen Morris said this for the release of Retro: "Cries and Whispers is a great revelation because everyone thinks it's called Mesh. But it isn't. It was mislabelled in 1987 and nobody ever noticed."

Q: Why is The Perfect Kiss on my CD shorter than on my LP?
A: Well, it simply has to do with space. Factory ran out of space on the CD when they made Substance, therefore they had to shorten The Perfect Kiss by removing an instrumental passage after about 7 minutes. The full length version is available on the LP version of the album. Shellshock and Hurt were also edited.

Q: How limited is the UK limited edition of the Substance cassette?
A: The story goes that Tony Wilson ordered and paid for 10000 copies, but he only received 2000...

Q: What are those colorful things on the sleeve?
A: [Jonathan Scott] "The images on Substance were of coral and a Peony rose. There were a host of ideas mooted for the sleeve but these were by far the most effective."
