Research Council Previous Research and Project Awards to Address Poverty
2008-09Dr. Sherri Cianca---Educating the Poor in Rural Ethiopia: Scheduling, Curriculum and Pedagogy This project will research effective means of educating the poor in rural Ethiopia, especially children involved in child labor and will result in a plan for a particular non-profit in Ethiopia that is in the process of constructing and programming a school for these rural children. Funds will cover a portion of travel and research related costs for an initial trip to Ethiopia in October 2008. Dr. Jamie Pimlott--Helping Seniors Engage A research-based service project that begins to ameliorate the effects of poverty is proposed for Buffalo-Niagara area senior citizens. Targeted areas of improvement include civic engagement, self-efficacy, political engagement, health disparities and other co-contributing factors of poverty. Funds will be used for outreach, materials, transportation, data entry and coding, incentives and stipends for coordination. Dr. Craig Seal--MBA Service Learning Project: Community, Caring and Compassion The purpose of the project is to research and implement a viable, value-added and sustainable service-learning component to the MBA Program that directly addresses the issue of poverty. The goal is to develop a service learning curriculum component that connects commerce education to the elimination of poverty. The intended outcomes include both student experiential learning objectives as well as empowering communities to become self-sufficient through commerce principles to further the Vincentian mission of knowledge and compassion. Funds will be used to support the research and development of these components. Dr. Paul Schupp and Dr. Timothy Ireland--Environmental Justice: Poverty and the Location of Hazardous Waste Using multivariate analyses and computer mapping of environmental waste exposure and demographic data, this study investigates the degree to which impoverished and minority communities in Upstate NY cities are subjected to environmental discrimination by being subjected to a disproportionate level of harmful exposure to hazardous waste. Funds will be used to support student assistants to gather and input data.
2007-08Mitchell Alegre--Vincentian Leaders This project will establish a permanent component of EAGLE with the goal of developing students into student leaders who are motivated and able to lead the alleviation of poverty, following the example of St. Vincent de Paul. Adrienne Leibowitz--"Malawi Children's Village" and "Orphan Support Africa" Direct Service Project This project will entail working with two related organizations that provide care, education and support to orphans and vulnerable children in Africa.
