Niagara University Library
Laptop Lending Program
We’ve noticed that there aren’t always enough computers available for you to use for research and projects, so we are piloting a Laptop Lending Program.

By presenting your NU Student ID card and a second form of identification (such as a driver’s license) at the Circulation Desk, you can check out a laptop for use within the building. Headphones and USB storage devices are also available for loan. The loan length for laptops and accessories is two hours.

The Laptop Lending Program also takes advantage of wireless technology. The Internet is available via a wireless network throughout much of the building, and for areas not well-covered, you can plug directly into a network jack.

When you borrow a laptop, you must understand and agree to the Laptop Lending Agreement and sign it. This form will be provided to you at the Circulation Desk.

Laptop Lending Agreement

I understand the following:

  • Laptops may be checked out by currently enrolled students of Niagara University for use within the Library building only. Use of computers is governed by the use and privacy policies of the Information Technology Department of the University.

  • To check out a laptop, a valid Niagara University ID card must be presented along with a second form of identification.

  • Laptops may be borrowed for up to three hours, but are always due back at the circulation desk no later than a half hour before closing time. Laptops are available on a first-come first-serve basis and may not be reserved.

  • The overdue fine for laptops is $10 per hour.

  • Laptops will not be loaned if there is a delinquent charges exceeding $15 on the borrower's record.

  • The laptop should never be unattended. If the fire alarm rings, please bring the laptop outside with you. Food or drink should not be consumed in the vicinity of the laptop.

  • Any files saved on the laptop will be lost upon rebooting or turning off the computer. Niagara University Library is not responsible for any loss of data. Portable USB storage devices may be borrowed along with the laptop. Remember to delete your files from the USB storage device before returning it.

  • A Wireless laptop has a 2-3 hour battery life, but due to high demand, may not have a full charge when you receive it and therefore may need to be plugged into an electrical socket along the wall of the building. Please do not string power cables across areas that people walk.

  • Wireless connections are available on the first and second floors, not in the basement. The Group Study room in the basement has a network cable that allows you to plug directly into the laptop. Print jobs can be released using your ID card at either the printer located in the basement or the printer located on the main floor.

  • The Library reserves the right to deny use of a laptop to any borrower for any reason.

I agree to the following:

  • To pay the full repair costs for any damage (including cosmetic) that should occur while a laptop is checked out to me.

  • To pay within 7 days the full replacement cost of $1,500 if the laptop is lost, stolen, not returned, or damaged beyond repair while checked out to me. If I fail to pay the replacement cost, I understand that such payment due will be added to my student account and that such monies owed could impact my ability to enroll in classes, graduate, and obtain transcripts. In addition, the University could take legal action to enforce such payment.

  • To pay the full replacement cost of any laptop peripheral lost, stolen, not returned, or damaged beyond repair while checked out to me.

  • That there is no existing visible damage to the laptop I am checking out and that possession of a printed receipt from the Library is the only proof that a laptop has been returned by me.
