All students from the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management are invited to attend the college's annual Career Fair, sponsored by the college and Career Services. This event is an excellent opportunity to meet with recruiters from various hospitality and tourism employers. It is important for all students interested in applying for an internship or full-time position to research the employer prior to attending the fair. On behalf of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Career Services Office at Niagara University, I’m pleased to invite you to be part of the exclusive group of employers in the hospitality and tourism industry to participate in our seventh annual Hospitality and Tourism Career Fair. This event, which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, will provide you with an excellent opportunity to recruit our highly qualified students for internships, part-time jobs, summer jobs, and full-time employment.

For your information, there are 400 students currently enrolled in the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, concentrating on course work in lodging, foodservice, tourism, or sport management. All of our students must complete 800 hours of approved industry experience to fulfill their degree requirements. The focus of our entire curriculum is on practical industry applications.

The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management is ranked in the top 20 hospitality and tourism programs in the country. We were the first in the world to offer a bachelor’s degree in tourism and the seventh accredited hospitality and tourism program in the nation. Moreover, of the 175 baccalaureate programs offered in the U.S., we have the distinction of being one of only five at the college-level status. We are a founding member of The Leading Hotel Schools of the World, publisher of The Rooms Chronicle, an industry oriented trade journal, and a provider of customized training/research through the Hospitality Training & Research Center.

The complete schedule for the Hospitality and Tourism Career Fair will be as follows:

                           10:30 - 11:30 a.m.               Employer registration and set-up, Castellani Art Museum

                           11:30 - 12:45 p.m.               Luncheon, Statler Dining Room, Fourth Floor, St. Vincent’s Hall

                             1 - 3 p.m.               Career Fair, Castellani Art Museum

                             3:15 - 4:15 p.m.               Hospitality Suite, Statler Dining Room, Fourth Floor, St. Vincent’s Hall

                             3:30 - 7 p.m.               Interviews, assigned rooms in St. Vincent’s Hall

There are multiple levels of support available and it is a wonderful opportunity for your organization to gain additional exposure at Niagara University. For directions to campus and parking information, please view the interactive map at We will have shuttle service available from the campus parking lots as well as student volunteers to assist with loading and unloading.

Online registration is here. The nonrefundable fee for participating in this exciting career fair program is $200, which includes registration, lunch, light refreshments, and display table. The fee may be paid online by credit card, or if you prefer, a check payable to Niagara University may be mailed to the Office of  Career Services, Lower Level Seton Hall, Niagara University, NY 14109. Please also indicate when registering if you are interested in interviewing students while you are on campus. You will be contacted in advance to make arrangements.

Career Fair Tips for Students

Before the fair

  • Review the list of companies attending and positions being offered.
  • Conduct research on the companies attending the fair by using the library and internet resources.
  • Update and revise your resume. You may want to leave the objective out for the purpose of the fair.
  • Bring 25 copies or more of your resume.
  • Prepare a short, 30-second commercial about yourself. Introduce yourself and discuss your qualifications.
  • Dress appropriately - the safest look is traditional and conservative style. Pay attention to details.
  • Practice good grooming, iron clothes, and polish your shoes.
  • Carry a small portfolio to hold your resume and any company literature you collect.

The Dos

  • Arrive early.
  • Smile and shake hands in a confident, but not bone-crushing manner.
  • Collect business cards and company information from representatives. Write notes about your conversation.
  • Network with employers even though they may not have a potential place for your skills at that particular time.
  • Maintain good eye contact.
  • Convince the employer how your skills and qualifications fit his or her needs. You have to sell yourself!

The Don'ts

  • Don't take anyone with you who isn't looking for a job.
  • Don't take too much of the employer's time, but be sure to get good information.
  • Don't make the mistake of venting about former employers to potential new ones.
  • Don't descend upon an employer if he or she is surrounded by other job seekers. Wait for a chance to have a brief, but meaningful conversation on a one-to-one basis.
  • Don't go to the fair with unrealistic expectations.

After the fair

  • Critique your performance and review information gathered.
  • Prioritize your list of leads.
  • Follow-up with a phone call and/or thank you letter.
