Current Research
- Research Focus: Modern United States history, African American history since the Civil War, American political development (post-1945), the American civil rights movement, modern African American political history in South, African history (1500 to 1850)
- Dr. Hayter’s research focuses on modern African American history. He is especially interested in the American civil rights movement, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and black voter mobilization since Brown v. Board of Education. His research draws attention to black voter mobilization in the border South prior to 1965, the implementation of the Voting Rights Act, and the unintended consequences of African American political empowerment, white resistance to political equality and local African American governance.
