Niagara University, in collaboration with its partner in education, Catholic Health, announces a unique half-day symposium. “Transformation of Healthcare." Catholic Health, which provides internships for Niagara University students enrolled in its executive healthcare MBA program, continues to explore opportunities to make healthcare more affordable and accessible.

Discussion topics include:

• Transformation of Healthcare

Businesses and individuals across the country struggle with ways to balance healthcare needs while controlling rising costs. What does the future hold? For the payer of healthcare, either the self-insured business or the insurer offering coverage to businesses, high-performing health systems pursue high-quality services while seeking to reduce and control the rising cost of care.

At this symposium, you will learn firsthand how Catholic Health is deftly navigating the twists and turns of healthcare reform, leading the evolution of healthcare to become a high performing health system by delivering the right care, in the right place, while decreasing rising costs. Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurers are endorsing and financially supporting new models of delivery piloted by the Centers for Medicare Services and being developed right here at home by Catholic Health.

Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., president of Niagara University, will welcome guests to Niagara University and set the stage for the day’s discussion.

Joseph McDonald, president and C.E.O. of Catholic Health and chairman-elect of the Healthcare Association of New York State, will provide an overview of the development of Catholic Health and the organizations that comprise its system of care. He will also explain the steps taken in cooperation with Catholic Medical Partners, a group of over 900 physicians who, in partnership with Catholic Health, design and direct the care models offered to patients.

Michael Edbauer, D.O., Catholic Medical Partners chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs for home care and primary care at Catholic Health, will address the evolution of Catholic Medical Partners in collaboration with Catholic Health to become a high-performing health system. His discussion will include the conversion to electronic medical records, implementation of standardized medical paths of care and the use of care coordinators in the physician’s office to enhance care for patients with chronic medical conditions to not only improve their quality of life, but also control the cost of care for those who use the most healthcare services.

James A. Dunlop, Jr., Catholic Health C.F.O. and executive vice president of finance, will discuss the financial aspects of a high-performing health system, how this model will be financed and what economic benefits it offers the payers of healthcare, including the federal and state government, as well as private insurers such as BlueCross BlueShield, Health Now and United Health Care.

Michael Moley, Catholic Health senior vice president of human resources, will discuss how Catholic Health has capitalized on its quality, delivery and cost model to develop a benefit plan being offered to Western New York employers at a significant cost savings.

Peggy Choong, Ph.D., professor and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) director of continuous improvement at Niagara University, will present closing remarks.

Panel of Experts

Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., has led Niagara University on a process of transformation that has significantly developed the physical character of the university’s campus and its 21st century approach to teaching and learning. Close to $100 million has been invested in new construction, renovation, improvement and redevelopment projects. He was ordained as a Vincentian Priest in 1967, was assigned to Niagara in 1970 as a lecturer in religious studies, and received his doctoral degree in theology from The Catholic University of America.

Joseph McDonald leads one of the largest health systems in WNY, with annual operating revenues of over $800 million and an economic impact of over $1.8 billion. During his tenure, Catholic Health has experienced a growth in services and advanced technology, improved quality and safety, and returned to fiscal stability, finishing the last eight years with positive operating margins. He is Chairman-Elect of the Healthcare Association of New York State; serves on the regional policy board of the American Hospital Association; is a board of directors member of WNED, Stella Maris and the HSBC Advisory Board; serves on the Canisius College Board of Trustees; and is the 2011 Recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives Regent’s Award.

Michael Edbauer, D.O., has over 15 years of experience in medical management and healthcare consulting. He developed and implemented the clinical integration program for Catholic Medical Partners (CMP), including transformation of 19 primary care practices to PCMH level 3 status, and has been integral in developing an ACO model for CMP. Under his leadership, CMP received NCQA accreditation for Disease Management in CAD, CHF and Diabetes in 2011. At

Catholic Health, Dr. Edbauer provides medical leadership, furthering integration between Catholic Health and Catholic Medical Partners. A board certified pediatrician, he will complete his MBA in May 2012.

James A. Dunlop, Jr., was instrumental in leading Catholic Health’s success in attaining financial stability. A certified public accountant, he received his MBA with a dual concentration in healthcare systems management and accounting from the University at Buffalo. He was one of 12 healthcare executives, age 40 and under, selected for Modern Healthcare’s “Up and Comers” honor in 2008, and was also named to Business First’s Forty Under Forty list in addition to receiving CFO of the Year honors from Business First in the non-profit category in 2009.

Michael Moley leads Catholic Health’s personnel, compensation and benefits, organizational development, recruitment and retention, safety, associate health, labor relations, and physician recruitment efforts. He is on the Healthcare Association of New York State HR Council and the University at Buffalo WNY Nursing Workforce Collaborative. His prior experience includes serving as vice president of Human Resources and Administration for Dunlop Tire Corporation and roles at the United Mine Workers Health and Retirement Fund and the Travelers Insurance Companies.

Peggy Choong, Ph.D., is a Professor and the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) Director of Continuous Improvement at Niagara University. She received her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1998. Her research and publications are in areas of ethics, consumer satisfaction, consumer research, and advertising.
