The Underground Railroad was the route taken by slaves on their journey towards freedom. As the map indicates, the trail for some passed through the Western New York area into Canada. The City of Niagara Falls’ heritage is inextricably linked to this passageway. The goal of the annual Freedom Trail Festival is to keep alive the memory of those who fled to freedom and those that helped them along the way.
