September 9, 2008: Poetry Society Meeting on September 17
There will be an interest meeting for the Poetry Society next Wednesday (9/17/08) Under the Taps (LLGC) at 7pm. We will be discussing ideas for the upcoming semester as well as sharing poetry, so bring anything you have been working on. (There is no obligation to read though.)
Possible events for the year include slams at NU and the Albright Knox in Buffalo, a reading with the Aquila, Open Mic Night, video/audio recordings, producing a collection of everyone's poetry, and any other suggestions people may have.
Feel free to e-mail Nolan Guiffre with any questions or if you are interested but unable to make the meeting.

May 1, 2008: NU English Department Celebrates Students at Day of Recognition

The English department presented awards to graduating seniors at the College of Arts and Sciences' annual Day of Recognition. Anthony Cirilla received the John Devine award; Julie Bonvissuto, Sade Cathey, and Sarah Traphagen received the Eugene Blair awards. Pictures from the awards ceremony are availble in the English department photo gallery.
April 21, 2008: NU English Department Celebrates the Retirement of Dr. Mercedes O'Dea

The English Department bade farewell to long-time adjunct Dr. Mercedes "Mickey" O'Dea at a luncheon attended by Fr. Levesque, the University's president and by Dr. Bonnie Rose and Dr. Marilyn Fleckensteinn, Academic Vice-Presidents. Pictures from the party are available on the English department's Flickr stream.
March 3, 2008: Niagara English Major Presents at Undergraduate Research Exposition
On January 22nd, 2008, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) hosted the inaugural Undergraduate Research Exposition to showcase undergraduate research throughout New York state. Conference attendance was competitive with selection by a panel of CICU faculty. Two science entries, one history and one English abstract were selected from Niagara University. From the English department Zachary Mills presented a study titled “An Awful Doom:” The Distortion of Transmission in Rappaccini’s Daughter” sponsored By Dr. Paula Kot.
While in Albany, Mr. Edward Reinfurt of the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovations (NYSTAR) and Mr. Abraham Lackman, President of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, spoke about the promising future of funding for academic research in the sciences. In addition, Senator George Maziarz came by to discuss the research with the students and take a few photos.
October 19, 2007: Sigma Tau Delta to Hold Fall 2007 Initiation
Due to unprecedented interest, Sigma Tau Delta will be initiating eligible candidates during the Fall 2007 semester. To apply for membership:
- download a membership form and complete it (forms are also available from Dr. Karper's office)
- obtain an unofficial or official copy of your transcript from WebAdvisor or the Records office
- return the form and copy of your transcript to Dr. Karper's office in Dunleavy 350
- check your email and local address for information about your candidacy
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY OCTOBER 31, 2007.
August 7, 2007: NU English Professor to Give Talks at Harvard, Cornell, and University of Minnesota
Dr. Joseph Little, assistant professor of English, is scheduled to give three department talks this fall at Harvard University (Department of History of Science), Cornell University (Department of Science and Technology Studies), and the University of Minnesota (Department of Rhetoric). The Harvard and Cornell talks will address the epistemic role of analogy and metaphor in science; the Minnesota talk will focus on ways to enlist advances in cognitive science in rhetorical scholarship involving figuration.
April 10, 2007: Niagara English student Starts Poetry Weekly!
Nolan Guiffre, an English major at Niagara, has started a new online poetry publication called Poetry Weekly, where poets from across the Northeast share their new poems. The main idea beyond the publication is to give the poets an audience for their work in progress. All poets are welcome to submit whenever they have a poem to share. Please send poems to poetryweekly@yahoo.com along with a very brief biography.
March 1, 2007: Sigma Tau Delta Recruiting for 2007!
Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society,has now opened up applications for membership. Students must have at least a B average in English, have completed at least three semesters of college work, and be in the top thirty percent of their graduating class.
September 27, 2006: Join us to Celebrate Niagara's 150th Anniversary!
Please join us on September 27th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on the third floor of Dunleavy
Hall, in the main lobby, for the Dean of Arts & Sciences party for the 150th
Anniversary Celebration of Niagara University's founding.
We've invited several former English majors who have found employment using their English degrees. They'll be available to talk with our current
students about their successes.

April 7, 2006: English Major Meghan Anson Wins Third Place in Poetry Contest
Meghan Anson, a senior English major, has won third place in the Buffalo
Boomdays poetry contest and will read her poem at the Boomdays Festival. Congratulations, Meghan!
February 27, 2006: Deadline for Sigma Tau Delta Applications Approaching
The deadline for applications for consideration for Sigma Tau Delta is March 1st . To apply, please complete the membership eligibility form and return it to Dr. Rita Pollard in care of the Office of Academic Support on the first floor of Seton Hall. Although the deadline is March 1st, if students can get applications to Dr. Pollard by Friday March 3 in the Learning Center they will still be considered.
February 27, 2006: Niagara English Department Announces 4th Annual Poetry Contest
The English Department and Writing Studies minor are sponsoring the 4th annual poetry contest for Niagara students. The winning poet will be invited to read from his or her work at a public reading at the Castellani Museum with featured poet Barbara Cole, have one of their poems published in The Index, and receive $100. For further information and contest rules, please download a flyer or contact Dr. Jennifer Morrison.
To kick-off the poetry contest, local poet Liz Thelen will be reading from her work on Monday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m. in Under the Taps in Gallagher Center. February 17, 2006: English Department Adds Career Resources Bulletin Board
English Department work study students, with
help from our talented secretary Evelyn Tracy, have assembled a bulletin
board on the third floor of Dunleavy. It's next to the photocopy machine
which is tucked around sort of behind the elevator, next to room 315.
Please visit the bulletin board for a variety of resources, including our a running "tip of the week" feature, and lots of great on and off-campus resources!
November 15, 2005: Senior Seminar Students Hold Mini-Conference at Niagara
Students in the Fall 2005 Senior Seminars will be holding a mini-conference on Shakespeare's Romantic Comedies, featuring their own papers and a guest speaker. Colleen Kennedy from the University at Buffalo will be the featured speaker. The conference is from 5:30-8:30 p.m.. on Wednesday, November 16, in the Dunleavy Auditorium on the first floor. August 12, 2005: Dr. Kot and Dr. Karper To Chair WRT 100 Program
Dr. Paula Kot and Dr. Erin Karper will be serving as Chair and Associate Chair of the WRT 100 program for the 2005-2006 academic year. Questions about the WRT 100 program from faculty, staff, or students should be addressed to Dr. Kot or to Dr. Karper. Dr. Morrison, who headed the WRT 100 program until this year, will continue to serve as the coordinator for the Writing Studies minor.

The English department is pleased to announce the launch of its new Web site, with updated and improved content and usability. We are still looking for information and news from students and alumni. Please contact Dr. Karper if you have content to contribute.
August 1, 2005: English Department Welcomes Professor Joseph Little to Faculty
The English Department is pleased to welcome Professor Joseph Little, who will be a full-time assistant professor of English starting in Fall 2005. Dr. Little received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and has taught at the University of Minnesota as well as USCB. He specializes in technical and professional writing. Welcome, Dr. Little!
