Curator of Folk Arts
Niagara University, a private Catholic university sponsored by the Vincentian Community, seeks a Curator of Folk Arts with the Castellani Art Museum who under general supervision, plans, researches and implements Folk Arts programming including exhibitions, performances, artist workshops and demonstrations based on research and documentation of local traditional artists.
Essential Duties
- Conduct fieldwork, research and documentation of regional Folk Arts and artists to fulfill the museum's designation as the documentation center of folk arts in Western New York.
- Collaborate with artists and professional consultants to design, produce and coordinate a variety of Folk Arts public programs including exhibitions, public workshops for children and adults, teacher workshops, performances, lectures, and interactive educational activities for children.
- Write grants to support Folk Arts programs.
- Write and edit interpretive materials for exhibition catalogs, teacher resource materials, children's activities and press releases.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Folklore or related field, Ph.D. preferred;
- Two years experience as a public sector folklorists with hands-on implementation of programs;
- Valid Driver's license. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
Desirable Qualifications
- Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
- Proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: typewriter, computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly express ideas in writing.
- Good research and documentation skills.
- Sensitivity to the principles of visual design of exhibits and publications.
- Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of visiting folk artists, conducting research and interviews and to pick up and deliver folk arts for exhibitions and documentation.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and some holidays as necessary for the documentation of folk arts.
