Bio

Doug Tewksbury, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Niagara University.

Focus of Teaching

Doug teaches undergraduate courses that focus on themes of media studies and social justice, cultural studies, political economy, research methodologies, network society, advertising and consumer culture, critical theory, and communication history. A proponent of the public scholarship philosophy, he has written on pedagogical practices of teaching social justice principles, the future for young critical educators, and the uses of social media in the classroom.

Current Research Interest

Doug's primary research area is the intersection of technology, culture, and media.  His work has focused on the role of communication technology (particularly social media) in terms of new applications and possibilities of democracy, globalization, and the public sphere.  His current research is on the cultural effects of new technologies, digital labor, and social media on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, in addition to an interest in the untold cultural history of existing communication technologies.

Current Involvement

Doug comes to Niagara with a background in service learning and social justice.  Prior to obtaining his doctorate, Doug’s professional position was as Coordinator of Service Learning and Community Service at Suffolk University, where he worked closely with faculty and students to institute principles of community service and civic engagement, in addition to teaching workshops on social justice and social action.  He currently volunteers at several organizations in the Buffalo/Niagara area and serves on the board of directors for the Niagara Science Museum.
