Professor Pikas joined Niagara University’s School of Business in 1968 as an instructor after service in the Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He rose rapidly through the ranks to Full Professor and was the youngest full Professor in the school’s history. He holds the MBA degree from the University of Buffalo and has other advance degrees along with being certified in international marketing by U.S. Department of Commerce. He is active in student organizations having started the collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association. He was the chapter’s faculty advisor for eighteen years. Recently, he was asked to be the faculty advisor of CEO (Collegiate Entrepreneur’s Organization), a student business organization.
He is an active lecturer, blending theory with high doses of real world examples and practices. His primary area of expertise is in Principles of Marketing, International Marketing and Distribution. He has also taught in other business areas in the past. Students are encouraged to question, explore and disagree with him in class. He views marketing as an actively evolving field and it must be current to be relevant. To that end, many lectures are blended with current theories, technologies and products that students are familiar with or should become familiar with.
In his career, he has published and presented numerous papers and research studies. His professional papers take on a practical tone and two that are particularly notable are “The Economic Impact of the Sport Fishing Industry in Western New York”, presented at the New York State Economic Association, Rochester Institute of Technology and
“Contaminated Zircon and Hurricane Gordon: Management Decisions and Legal Implications”, A Case Study, presented at the Western Decision Sciences Institute Conference, Seattle, Washington. He also is an active consultant having consulted for regional and national business organizations along with some social organizations. A few notable consults would be Sun Mark Industries, General Foods and the United Church of Christ/Disciples of Christ churches. His speaking engagements have also been extensive. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Marketing and is a member in the American Marketing Association.
Professor Pikas has provided the full spectrum of service and teaching to his students and to his chosen profession. He views teaching as his most important activity as it is his craft. His motto is “I teach, therefore, I see the future”.
