Visiting Professor from Columbia Presents Lecture
“Orality in the Myth of Yurupary” The Tukano Indians in South America.
Castellani Art Museum - November 7, 2006 at 4:30 pm
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages proudly presents a lecture by
ERNESTO CARRIAZO-OSORIO of the Javeriana Jesuit University in Bogotá, Colombia
Title of his lecture: “Orality in the Myth of Yurupary—from Vaupés, the Colombian Northwest Amazon—or the Exegesis of the Unknowable: a Comparative Study Among the Texts by Count Stradelli, don Antonio Guzmán, and Gerardo Reichel Dolmatoff.” Dolmatoff defends the legitimacy of his version primarily based on the knowledge disclosed to him by don Antonio Guzmán, a native polyglot Tukano Indian from Vaupés, Colombia. Nonetheless, 7 years after Dolmatoff’s publication with CSWR, don Antonio Guzmán himself reappears as a vindicated primary source in this monograph. This confirms that some lines in Dolmatoff’s English translation of the myth and their respective explications are strongly distorted by Freudian ideas that do not belong at all to the Tukano Indians’ world view.
Annual Lecture Series Established: Religion in the Modern World

The series will focus on the role of religion in the modern world, with special interest in issues of social justice and inter-religious dialogue. Please stay tuned for future announcements regarding the inaugural lecture of this new series.
