The 4 Year Overview

 
  • Average Courses Necessary (Note: some degrees/majors require additional courses)
    • Average 5 courses each semester
    • Average 10 courses each year
    • Each course represents at least a 3 credit course relevant to your major or degree requirements.
  • Average GPA Required
    • 2.0 Overall GPA required for Graduation (2.5 for Social Work & Nursing)
    • 2.0 Major GPA required for Graduation (2.5 for Social Work & Nursing)
  • First-year, Sophomore & Junior "Checks" (Optional)
    • Due to demand in the senior surveys over the past few years, we are now offering several days each semester for drop in "check" appointments. 
    • Students who stop by on these days will meet one-on-one with a staff member in the Dean's office to review their progress, see if they are on track, and answer any academic questions (double majors, minors, transfer credit, etc...).  Individual students may also stop by or set up a similar appointments through out the year.
    • In the fall of 2006 over 140 students took advantage of these checks.
  • Senior Checks (Mandatory)
    • When: At the end of your Junior Year or at the beginning of your senior year
    • What: An appointment with the A&S Dean’s Office to review your progress toward graduation, get your diploma information, and fill out our senior survey
    • Senior checks will provide you with a proactive snapshot of your remaining requirements and is most useful if completed early.
  • How can I catch up on credit if I get behind
    • Overload Courses at NU
    • Summer Courses at NU
    • Transfer Courses Elsewhere
  • Career Development

First-Year Students (0-30 Credits)


  • Ask for help if you need it
  • Get to know your professors & explore interesting courses
  • Get familiar with NU policies, registration, and college life

 

Sophomore Students (31-60 Credits)


  • Start in on the mid-level major courses
  • Identify minors or a double major

Junior Students (61-90 Credits)


  • Ask your advisor about internship and Coop opportunities
  • Work with Career Development on your Resume and preparations for graduate school or job searches next year.
  • Schedule Your Senior Check Early or complete it in the summer.

Senior Students (90-120+ Credits)


  • Schedule your Senior Check by September or October
    • This is required and completing it early helps avoid problems later!
