Double Major Overview

    • A single degree with two major concentrations
  • How do I apply for a double major?
    • Double Major Form – Available online or in the Dean’s Offices
    • Signatures Required:
      • Your Advisor
      • The Department Chair of the 2nd Major

Guide to Double Majoring

  • How do the majors fit together?
  • Double majors must fulfill the entire curriculum card for your primary major, and the major requirements for the second major.
    • Primary Major
      • You must complete all the courses on the curriculum card
    • Secondary Major
      • You must complete the required courses for the secondary major including:
        • Major Courses with the exception of the advised electives
        • Analytical Skills that are specified (MAT102, CIS 233, SPK 101).
        • Any other general education courses that are specified (e.g. BIO 101 for Social work, and PHY 121 for Chemistry majors)
    • Steps to take in arranging your double major
      • Look for any cross-listed courses in the catalog
      • Review the designations for each of your second major courses
        • If one matches any of your remaining general education requirements you can slot that course into your primary curriculum card.
      • Review the analytical skills for each major as stated above
      • Check with your advisors to see whether any similar courses might be able to be substituted
  • Advisement for Double Majors
    •  Since you will have two advisors, you will need to work out a system with them regarding registration and advisement.   Keeping in touch with both of them will:
      • Ensure that you get important major information
      • Help you to stay on track with your courses
    • Pay close attention to the scheduling of your courses and when they might be offered
    • If you wish to double check your progress you may schedule an appointment with the Assistant to the Dean to review your curriculum to date.
  • Examples of Double Majors
    • Criminal Justice & Psychology
    • International Studies & Spanish
    • Mathematics & Chemistry
    • Theatre & English

 Double Degree Option

  • What is a double degree?
    • Two separate degrees from two different colleges within Niagara University
  • Requirements for a double degree
    • The majors must be from two separate colleges within NU
    • The majors must represent different degrees (BA, BS, BBA, BFA, etc)
    • You must complete at least 10 extra courses to complete a double degree
  • How do I apply for a double degree?
    • Double Degree Form – Available online or in the Dean’s Offices
    • Signatures Required:
      • Your Advisor
      • The Department Chair of the 2nd Major
      • Both Dean's Offices
      • Executive Vice-President
    • Schedule a meeting with each Assistant to the Dean to review your curriculum and credit placement.
  • How do the majors fit together in my curriculum?
    • You must complete the entire curriculum for both majors including the general education requirements.
    • Be careful if you use a course from one major to fulfill a general education requirement as it may not work on the other card if it is a major course.
    • You can use your free and advised electives for your other major courses for each curriculum card.
    • Look for any overlapping courses.
