Advising & Your Advisor

Return to the A&S Advising Index

Your Advisor

Your advisor is a resource to assist you throughout the semester with a variety of major, academic policy, advising, registration, and career related questions.  Your advisor is the primary person who can help you navigate NU's academic requirements.

  • When should I see my advisor?
    • For advisement and registration
    • To make a change to your schedule
    • To discuss your major or career interests
    • To talk about your options if you are struggling academically
    • Any other issues for which you may need advice
  • How do I locate my advisor?
    • Contact Information for A&S advisors is located in the A&S Faculty Directory
    • Check with the department secretary if you don’t know the name of your advisor
    • Your advisor is listed on MyNU
  • What if my advisor in MyNU doesn't match my major?
    • Have you switched your major recently?  Paperwork is necessary to change your major. If you recently turned in the form it may be being processed.
    • If you haven’t switched your major, see your department secretary for assistance.

Advising Timeline

  • Before the semester begins
    • Check your grades from the previous semester through MyNU
    • Make any necessary changes to your schedule
      • F to Rs - If you failed a course, retaking the same course at NU, is one of the fastest ways to raise your GPA (Limit of 4 courses for F to Rs)
      • If you swapped your major, is your schedule still relevant?
      • Check to be sure that your schedule is accurate on MyNU
      • Make sure you are registered for 5 courses (approximately a 4 year plan) unless you have a reason for taking less (Heavy science load, work obligations, part-time, etc...).
  • First week and a half of the semester.
    • Add/Drop period for last minute changes (See Below)
    • After the first week you will need a permission to enroll form available from Records
  • Third to Tenth week (see the Academic Calendar for the specific dates)
    • From the second to the tenth week a drop will result in a W
    • You will need instructor permission to add a course at this point in the semester
  • Advisement & Registration (Click here for more detailed information)
    • Meet with your advisor after the next semester Course Offerings are published
    • Your advisor must unlock you before you can register online
    • Be sure to update your MyNU profile
    • Register for courses when your Registration Window opens
    • Check your midterm grades for the current semester through MyNU and revise your schedule accordingly.
  • Tenth Week (see the Academic Calendar for the specific date)
    • Drops will result in a W or F depending on whether you are passing or failing
    • This is usually the last date for which you can apply for a tutor
