Make sure that you have completed your senior check at least two semesters before you plan to graduate!

 

Graduation Requirements & Commencement Eligibility

Graduation occurs in January, May, and August for students who have completed all of their degree requirements.   The Annual Commencement Ceremony is only in May.

Graduation Requirements

  1. Completion of an official Senior Check - Schedule it Early!
  2. Completion of all degree/major requirements as determined by the Dean's Office.
  3. GPA Requirements
      • Achieve a 2.0 Overall GPA. (2.5 for Social Work/Nursing).
      • Achieve a 2.0 Major GPA    (2.5 for Social Work).
      • Note: Social Work Requires C grades or higher and Nursing requires C+ grades or higher in all required major coursework.

Eligibility to Participate in Commencement

    • In order to participate in the undergraduate commencement students must be deemed eligible by the Dean's Office.  All of the graduation criteria above must be met to be eligible to participate in Commencement.
    • Alternative participation status may be granted to undergraduate students who meet the GPA requirements above, but are one or two courses shy of graduation but have a strong plan for completing their degree requirements.
    • If you are concerned about your commencement eligibility please contact the Dean's Office at 286-8060.  Low overall GPA, low major GPA, F grades, incomplete's, late registration, missing transcripts (transfer, AP, CLEP, Study Abroad, other) can affect your ability to graduate and walk in commencement.

  • Commencement Liturgy
    • Date: Saturday - May 17, 2008 (4pm)
    • Location: Upper Level Gallagher Center, Niagara University
    • Directions: http://www.niagara.edu/campus/
    • This is a great time to take pictures at NU.
  • Undergraduate Commencement
    • Date: Sunday - May 18, 2008 (Assemble 11 am)
    • Location/Directions: University at Buffalo, Alumni Arena
    • Give yourself enough time to park and locate the robing area
    • Students should arrive by 11:15 AM
      • CHECK IN WITH A&S STAFF WHEN YOU ARRIVE!
      • Students need to find the triple gym, check in, & locate their seat. If we do not know you are present, your name will not be read across the stage!  
    • Students leave the triple gym promptly at 12:30pm
 
Important Information
  • Further Information about commencement, including status issues will be mailed to eligible seniors in the Spring semester.
 
  • Caps and Gowns: will be available through the Campus Store.  We strongly recommend picking them up before graduation.
 
  • Pronunciation Check: If you are concerned about the pronunciation of your name, please stop in or call the Dean's Office at 286-8060 to verify the correct pronunciation.
 
  • Only 6 Tickets will be issued for family members & guests for each student eligible to walk in graduation due to equity and the number of seats available at the Undergraduate Commencement.  These limitations are placed upon us by the venue.  Your understanding is appreciated.
 
  • Ticket Distribution (Campus Activities Office, Gallagher Center)
    • April 28-May 2 (9:30 am - 4 pm)
    • Extended Hours May 1st (8pm - 9:30pm)
    • May 5-9 (9:30 am - 4 pm)
    • Extended Hours May 7th (6:30 pm - 8 pm)
    • PLEASE ONLY TAKE AS MANY TICKETS AS YOU NEED.
    • Ticket Redistribution Date: May 14th (9:30 am) First Come First Served
 
  • Family Members & Guests should arrive early to be sure to get a seat, particularly families who might need assistance getting seated in the arena.
 
  • Canadian Students & Families - Graduation generally coincides with Victoria Day, so please leave plenty of extra time for border crossings to avoid last minute bridge delays.
 
  • Diploma Holds:
    • Financial Holds: Diplomas cannot be given to students with financial holds.  We recommend checking with Student Accounts the week before graduation to double check that all balances are paid.  Student Accounts can be reached at 286-8300.
    • Learn & Serve Holds : Diplomas cannot be given to students who have not logged in their 3 hour Learn & Serve requirement. (716) 286-8750  
 
  • Diploma Accuracy: Please note, every attempt is made to ensure accuracy of diplomas, and any errors are reordered.  If you notice errors on your diploma at graduation, please contact the A&S office the week after graduation and we will reorder any errors.
 
  • Commencement Video/DVD will be streaming online live for out of town guests this year (initial tests are scheduled in April).  A DVD of the ceremony will be sent to all graduating students.
 
  • Commencement Photos - Will be taken by Northeast Photo and links to the proofs will be available online following graduation.
 
  • Commencement Flowers - Commencement Flowers will be available for pre-order and purchase on the day of commencement.
