Course Planning for CIS Majors

The recommendations below are guidelines. Clearly, students who decide to major in CIS after entering Niagara, who have had to interrupt normal progress toward the degree, or who have other special circumstances, may follow other schedules.

Usual sequence: Other planning points:

Fall, Freshman year
CIS 160

Spring, Freshman year
CIS 260

Fall, Sophomore year
CIS 265

Spring, Sophomore year
CIS 365

Fall, Junior year
CIS 380
CIS 390

Spring, Junior year
CIS 480

Fall, Senior year
CIS 350

Spring, Senior year
CIS 499

  • Two CIS electives, usually taken during the Junior or Senior years, typically selected from CIS 255, 320, 332, 465, internships/coops (375, 475, 493, 494, 496, 497), Honors Thesis (403, 404; for Honors students only)

  • It is preferred that students take calculus (MAT 107 or 111) before or concurrently with CIS 365.

  • The required course MGT 390 now has prerequisites of MGT 271 and CIS 132 (the latter is satisfied by CIS 232). Students should plan accordingly.

    Thus, for example,

    • CIS 232 should ordinarily be taken before Fall, Junior year. Notice this course is prerequisite for CIS 332, CIS 380, and MGT 390.

    • MGT 271 should ordinarily be taken before Spring, Senior year.
