Some Current Student Bios

Vince Carroll is recent graduate currently enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Illinois currently a senior at Niagara University.  He was a chemistry major, who does extensive research in the Advanced Organic Laboratory. Most of the research involves synthesizing novel polymers in hopes of exhibiting antimicrobial properties. Vince was also a teacher’s assistant in the Intro Organic Chemistry Lab and was a tutor to freshmen for Intro to Chemistry. Vince was also a chemistry demonstration assistant for NUSOC.

Jeanette Drapo is a senior at at Niagara University.   She is double majoring in Chemistry (B.A) and Biology (B.Sc).  Jeanette as worked on many projects to date.  She is the key contributor to the multilayering project and has developed the assay for determining the biological viability of the surfaces.  She will be starting her honors project this Fall on attempted to develop a catalytic McMurray coupling reaction.  Jeanette is also the Vice-President of the NU's chapter of the American Chemical Society.

Jeff St. Denis is senior at Niagara University.   He is double majoring in Chemistry (B.A) and Biology (B.Sc).  His current research area is the Structure Activity Relationship (S.A.R) of para-substituted phenols and model gram positive and gram negative bacteria.  He hopes that the results from this study will lead to many more avenues to pursue in the formulation of highly effective anti-microbial agents. Jeff splits his time between research and class to pursue his baseball career.  He is currently on the Niagara University baseball team.  He is a right-handed pitcher for the team who hopes to pursue his baseball career into the professional ranks.  If this does not work out then he is going to attend medical school for an M.D-Ph.D program or to graduate school to become a University professor.

Natalie Hummel is entering her senior year at Niagara.  She is a chemistry major but has not decided which area in chemistry to focus on.  She enjoys both organic and biochemistry. She was awarded the Top Sophomore Departmental Student last year.  She is also a tutor for organic chemistry.  Natalie plans on pursuing a graduate degree after Niagara University.  She is unsure as to what she wishes to do with her degree but she is strongly considering teaching.
Megan Baumler is entering her junior year at Niagara. She is currently a chemistry major but still unsure of which area she would like to concentrate in. Megan is a 2005 graduate from Tonawanda High School. Working in the research lab since her freshman year, she is working on a project to generate anti-bacterial surfaces as well as other various experiments. After she receives her BS in Chemistry from NU, she plans on getting her PhD and becoming a research scientist. Meg has mad skills.
John Cadwalader is a senior at Niagara University. He is a chemistry major, and psychology minor. John graduated from Niagara Catholic High School in 2004. He began his work in the organic lab at the beginning of his sophomore year. The research he is involved in is creating potential antibacterial surfaces. He also tests compounds for antibacterial characteristics by using specific compound solutions on bacteria, and gauging the inhibition of bacteria growth. John balances school work with seeing his friends and family, studying music on the piano and guitar, and training brazilian jiu-jitsu / mixed martial arts. He plans on attending medical school, and focusing on orthopedics.

Mallory is a junior majoring in Biochemistry. She graduated from LakeVille Memorial High School of Otisville, Michigan in 2005. She began working in the Chemistry Department as a lab assistant in the fall of '05 organizing, cleaning, and preping the labs. In the winter of '06 she began to help with Dr. Priefer's research project of creating anti-bacterial surfaces. In the fall of '06 she will be doing research on arterail plaque with Dr. McCourt and tutoring General Chemistry students. In her spare time (when she finds some) she is a member of the American Chemical Society and of the social sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Theo Williams is a junior at Niagara University. He is a chemistry major and religious studies minor. Theo graduated from Sweet Home High School in 2004. He is a chemistry and mathematics tutor in the Office of Academic Support. In his spare time, which he somehow has a lot of, he enjoys cycling, hiking and playing pen-and-paper role-playing games. He plans on earning his PhD in chemistry in the near future.
Paula Siejak is a junior at Niagara University.  She is a Biochemistry major who would like to work in the medical field.  Paula graduated with honors from Lockport High School in 2005.  She is a commuter from Lockport, but she still finds time to participate in a few clubs on campus.  This includes being a member of the NU American Chemical Society and the N-Zone.  In her spare time, Paula likes to help out and spend time with her family, listen to music, and do some reading.

Cara Lucas is a junior at Niagara University. She is a biochemistry major who would like to pursue a career in medicine. Cara graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 2005. She worked in the organic lab multilayering in spring 2006, and has since been genotyping for a cardiac research project in another lab. Outside the lab Cara is a peer tutor for the intro bio and intro chem students. She is also training for her second sprint triathlon, which she plans to complete this upcoming summer.
