Work Study Ability - Definitions

Work Study Task Ability – Definitions

Always Wear Eye Protection!!!!!

  • Daily Task Log Sheet – understands and acknowledges that completion of the work log is imperative for performance review and need for the positions
  • General Lab Clean up
    • Organize Bench Tops – arrange the items on the bench shelf in an orderly fashion – cords are wrapped up and only regularly used items are left out – all other items can be stored appropriately
    • Wipe Down Benches – benches are wiped down with a damp sponge to lessen the possibility of contamination
    • Glassware – wash glassware according to procedure
    • Pipette – wash pipettes according to procedure
    • Inspect Glassware – for chips, cracks, and stars – dispose of broken glassware in the appropriate container
    • Returning Clean Glassware to Stock – Glassware should be stored in the appropriate labeled perimeter storage areas – (DO NOT OVERFILL AREAS) – extra glassware can be stored in other lab areas or main stock area
  • MSDS Look Up – able to search and print MSDS’s - the date reviewed is less than 5 years old – neatly staple and highlight appropriate data
    • Organize – sort and separate into binders that have been supplied – they should be neatly added to the binders
    • HMIS – able to locate the HMIS or NFPA safety codes
      • Advance HMIS – able to rate an MSDS using the HMIS or NFPA systems
  • Distilled/Nanopure Water – ability to distinguish the procedures for obtaining each type of water – (Nanopure is also known as: MilliQ or 18M?)
    • Refill Wash Bottles – as needed in every lab (500mL or 1L bottles)
    • Refill Carboys – as needed in every lab (currently 20L Carboys)
    • Nanopure Operations – Basic knowledge of using the Nanopure Diamond
    • Advanced Applications
      • Using advanced applications of Nanopure Diamond
      • Cleaning Still
      • Performing Maintenance operations on the Nanopure Diamond
  • Eyewash Stations – Performing Eyewash flow and point of use checks – check once a week
  • Solvent Refill – refill solvent containers as needed
    • Acetone Wash Bottles – used mainly in 224 but may be found in other areas (213N, 210, and 202).  Refill after lab use.
    • Stock Solvents – refill any half full stock solvents in RM 224
      • 224 Flammable Cabinet – Replace glass bottles and top off red safety containers – some glass bottles have Red Outer Shells – check bottles inside – usually you can tell it needs attention by the weight
      • 224 Solvent Area and Overflow – between the hoods there are solvent bottles that need to be topped off if half full and cabinet below Hood 1 has solvents that need to be checked
  • Gas Cylinder Logs – these are checked twice weekly – a reading of the main cylinder gauge is recorded to determine usage trends – if the cylinder is off we record that it is in use but off
  • Praxair RCM (Remote Monitor System) – usually reserved for an instrument tech position but anyone may be trained on this system if so desired
    • Checking system periodically and calculating trends with Excel
  • Solution Prep – preparing solutions as needed either for general use (Stock) or for individual labs.
    • Stock Acids – in 214 (Analytical Stock) Various concentrations of acids are stored for general  use – refill bottles as needed – Cool Acids with ice bath as needed and follow good lab practices
    • Stock Bases - in 214 (Analytical Stock) Various concentrations of bases are stored for general  use – refill bottles as needed – follow good lab practices
    • General Lab Prep – Dr. Marino sets up the general labs and from time to time needs a skilled and knowledgeable hand – if called upon to assist know your limits – the more you know where supplies are and how to prepare various concentrations the more prepared you will be
    • Organic Set Up – generally little is needed to set up this lab – lab knowledge and common lab sense help – preparing solutions and finding stock chemicals are key – ASK QUESTIONS if you have not taken Organic yet!
    • Analytical Prep – Precision and Accuracy are Key for preparing this lab – Most of the time it is require to know the EXACT concentration of the solution you prepare; it will either be used as a standard or unknown – USE SIG FIGS and SCIENTIFIC NOTATION – stumps some upper classmen!!!!
    • ADVANCED COURSE PREP – only the extremely skill can go to town and assist the professor in preparing these labs – Usually the student will branch off from normal work study duties and assist the professor directly.
      • Example: assisting Dr. McCourt with P-Chem Setup requires knowledge of where the chemicals may be – asking myself or Dr. Marino will help you – knowledge of supplies and apparatus are a must…if you take the time to ask me it will take too long, but I do know where things are so if you do not know ask.

As a general rule – I have been there done that, If you were not here I would be doing it anyway – the department and I will appreciate your dedication – you will appreciate it when you have that first interview – remember ask questions!!!  I will assume you know what you need to do if we sign off the check list.  After the check list has been signed off I still expect questions
